Here’s something most people don’t know. Cleaning the vent alone doesn’t take away the risk of a lint fire, because the heat source is the clothes dryer itself. It makes sense, then, to bring in someone with the training and background to look at every place a problem could start.

It started in the early 1960s, when Paul Guckin opened his appliance repair business. His son Eric grew up around the trade and signed on as an appliance repair apprentice in the early 1990s. More than 30 years later, Eric works as a master technician. He's seen a lot of dryers.

Eric works side by side with his daughter, Marissa, and his son-in-law, Eni. It's a small team. Between the three of them they cover daily operations, customer support, scheduling and the dryer vent work itself. Paul is semi-retired these days, though he still pitches in when he's needed. Prioritizing Dryer Fire Safety: Expertise in Every Vent
Did you know cleaning the vent by itself doesn’t lower fire risk? Lint fires start in the clothes dryer, since that’s the heat source. So it pays to hire a pro who has the background to check every spot where trouble can start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Every time the dryer runs, flammable lint from clothes and dryer sheets gets pulled through the lint screen housing. The screen catches some of it. The rest goes into the vent, and the dryer is built to push it all the way through and outside. How well that works depends on the design of the system. Some let lint move freely, others don't, and the gap between them is bigger than most people expect.
Lint accumulation happens in every dryer vent system, and it adds up. Fine particles clump together first, then the clumps get bigger. Eventually the path outside starts to close off and the dryer has to work harder. That back pressure forces highly flammable lint into the dryer's own chassis, where it can start to burn. A seriously dangerous situation.
Regular maintenance lowers the odds of that happening. But cleaning the vent alone is NOT enough to rule it out. Airflow has to be restored, and any deficiency causing pressure drop needs to be corrected.
Dryer manufacturers agree on this, and so do the US CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and the NFPA (National Fire Protection Assoc.). Regular dryer vent cleaning is a key part of preventing lint fires.
At Dryer Vent King we take it a step further. We check your system's airflow against how you actually use the dryer, and that tells us how often it should be cleaned. With this many variables, nobody can honestly give one answer for every home.
Twelve months works for a lot of people. Some can stretch to 24. Hair salons, vet hospitals and similar businesses often need service more often than that. What really decides it, though, is how each system was built, how it was installed and how efficiently it runs. That matters more than any set schedule.
Honestly, if it's been more than 1 year, you're probably due. Waiting until a load takes 2 or 3 hours to dry is like ignoring a slow leak in your tire until it's flat. By then it's too late.
Setting a regular service interval works better than waiting for warning signs to show up.
A professional dryer vent cleaning and a DIY attempt aren't the same thing.
We've bought the best tools on the market, and the professional brush kits alone run $1200+. Tools aren't our biggest asset, though. Knowledge, skill and years of practice are what get the most out of them, and that's what makes the cleaning thorough.
Every so often a client tells us about a past 'professional' dryer vent cleaning that was rushed, sometimes done in under 15 minutes.
We don't work that way. Each visit starts with a full inspection of the dryer and the vent system, so we know what needs attention, both to clean the vent and to get airflow back. If airflow isn't restored, the job isn't finished.
A first visit usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours. A 12-month follow up runs about 45 minutes. Every system is different, so the time can vary.
