Eric was thorough and explained everything so clearly. We had always had concerns about our existing set up. Things weren’t functioning the way they should, and he was quick to inspect, tell us what needed to be fixed, and immediately address the issues. When operating your dryer, flammable lint particles from clothing (and dryer sheets) are drawn through the lint screen housing. While the dryer's lint screen captures some lint, the remainder enters the vent system. The dryer is designed to propel these particles through the vent system, expelling them outside the home and into the atmosphere. However, the efficiency of this process varies among different vent system designs, with some allowing free movement of these particles while others are less efficient.
Over time, every dryer vent system collects lint particles, having a cumulative effect. Initially, fine particulate forms small clusters, which gradually grow larger. Eventually, your dryer works harder as the pathway to the outside becomes obstructed. The resulting back pressure compels the dryer to deposit highly flammable particles into its interior chassis, and may begin to burn, creating a highly dangerous condition.
Regular maintenance of the dryer vent system can diminish the likelihood of this condition, yet simply cleaning the vent is NOT sufficient to entirely prevent this scenario. It is crucial to restore airflow efficiency and address any deficiencies causing pressure drop.
Clothes dryer manufacturers, the US CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and the NFPA (National Fire Protection Assoc.) all agree regular cleaning of your dryer vent is a critical part of preventing dryer lint fires.

Given the numerous variables involved, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question.

Nevertheless, the crucial factor lies in the unique construction, installation, and efficiency of each system, holding greater significance than any fixed time frame.
Honestly, if it's been more than 1 year, you may be due. Delaying until your dryer takes 2 or 3 hours to dry a load of clothes is like knowing your tire has a leak but waiting until it's completely flat before adding air. It's too late.
A practical approach is to establish a consistent service interval rather than waiting for noticeable signs.
